Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive and painless test that measures the amount of oxygen in your blood that are supplied by your heart and lungs. Oxygen is essential for your body to function and your heart, brain and other organs need oxygen to function optimally. This test is done to determine if you need to be treated for a heart or lung problem.
There is no need for any preparation for this test.
Your doctor will attach a small clip-like device called a probe on your finger, toe, or earlobe. The device will show your heart rate and oxygen saturation level or the percentage of your red blood cells carrying oxygen. It also measures your heart rate.
An oxygen saturation level of 95 percent is considered normal for most healthy individuals. A level of 92 percent indicates potential deficiency in oxygen reaching tissues in the body.
The clip will be taken off once your results are ready. You will be able to go home after the test is done. You will be given a follow up appointment to review your test results. Should you feel unwell, contact your doctor immediately or call our 24-Hour Medical Urgency Clinic.
