An appendectomy is performed to remove an inflammed appendix due to appendicitis. It could burst if not treated immediately, causing bacteria to spread in your abdomen, which can be a life-threatening situation.
You will need to fast before the procedure and will be given a general anesthesia through an IV drip in your arm. You will be required to change into a hospital gown.
The appendectomy can be an open appendectomy or a laproscopic appendectomy.
In an open appendectomy, an incision is made in the lower right area of your abdomen after the area is cleaned. The appendix is removed and the incision is stitched. This type of appendectomy is done if infection has spread into your abdomen and to the other organs; or if you have had abdominal surgery previously.
In a laparoscopic appendectomy, a few small incisions are made in your abdomen. A small, narrow tube called a cannula is inserted into the incision to inflate your abdomen with carbon dioxide gas so that your appendix can be seen more clearly.
A laparoscope is then inserted through the incision. Images of your appendix is displayed on a monitor while your doctor removes it with surgical instruments. The incisions are closed and dressed after the removal of the appendix..
Laparoscopic appendectomy has fewer risks than an open appendectomy procedure, and generally has a shorter recovery time.
You will rest in a room until you are well enough to go home. You may feel some pain where the incisions were made but any discomfort should improve within a few days with prescribed painkillers. Antibiotics will also be prescribed to prevent and reduce the risk of an infection after surgery.
