The 3'R's of sarcoma management: Resection, Reconstruction and Radiotherapy

Soft tissue sarcomas often pose a challenge in treatment, especially when they present in difficult anatomic locations. The latest evidence on multi-modality treatments will be discussed in this context, in particular combining resection, radiotherapy and reconstruction for optimal oncological and functional outcomes.

Dr Jonathan Teh
Radiation Oncologist

Dr Jonathan Teh Yi Hui is a radiation oncologist at Farrer Park Hospital, as well as the Asian American Radiation & Oncology (AARO), the radiotherapy and oncology division of Asian American Medical Group. Prior to joining AARO, he was a consultant at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), where he had served in various roles since 2006. He specialises in genitourinary and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as bone and soft tissue sarcomas and paediatric cancers.  After completing his MBBS at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2002, Dr Teh commenced a Radiation Oncology residency at NCCS in 2007. He received the Singhealth Health Manpower Development Programme Award for Advanced Training in Clinical Oncology in 2009 and was an Honorary Clinical Fellow in the University College Hospital London Oncology department from 2009 to 2011. He was also active in the London Sarcoma Service, providing patient care and participating in clinical trials.

In 2011, he received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR UK) in Clinical Oncology. Upon returning to Singapore, Dr Teh was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore’s (FAMS) Chapter of Radiation Oncology and commenced work as a Consultant Radiation Oncologist at NCCS. In 2012, he joined the NCCS Blood Transfusion Committee until July 2017 and also received the Singhealth Doctor’s Long Service Award.  Dr Teh’s research interests include advanced radiotherapy for prostate cancer treatment. He was the Principal Investigator of a Phase II Trial in Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy for Low-Intermediate Risk Prostate Cancer from 2013 to 2017, which was Southeast Asia’s first trial of this non-invasive technique.  

Dr Teh’s work has been presented at international conferences, and he has also been invited to speak on these subjects in regional meetings. He has written and published extensively on the subject of sarcoma treatment.
 

Dr Gurpal Singh
Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr Gurpal Singh is a specialist board-accredited, fellowship-trained Orthopaedic surgeon subspecialising in orthopaedic oncology, joint replacement and sports injuries. Dr Singh’s clinical practice consists of bone and soft tissue tumours (benign and malignant), robotic-assisted joint replacement, complex reconstructions of the lower limb, and arthroscopic (key hole) surgeries of the hip and knee including sports injuries and meniscus/ligament reconstruction, in addition to general orthopaedic cases.

Dr Singh graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2004 with a Dean’s list award and gold medal and thereafter went on to pursue higher surgical training in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. He completed his advanced specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery in 2011 and was awarded the inaugural College of Surgeons Gold Medal for being the top candidate in the FRCSEd(Orth) examination, which was held in affiliation with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr Singh was awarded the Ministry of Health Scholarship for advanced specialty training in 2008 and he moved to Germany for 2 years after qualifying as an orthopaedic surgeon. He completed 2 fellowships in complex joint replacement/hip and knee surgery and musculoskeletal oncology at the Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, working with Professor Christoph H. Lohmann, and at University Hospital Muenster working with Professor Georg Grosheger and Professor Jendrik Hardes.

Dr Singh has a special interest in technologies in joint replacement surgery such as robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery, and has obtained his robotic-assisted surgery training and certification from Florida, USA. Dr Singh has regularly been invited to the Asia-Pacific region to conduct workshops to train Orthopaedic surgeons in this area. Dr Singh is also actively involved in research on increasing life span of joint replacements, and preventing infection and early failure of joint replacements. He collaborates with Professor Christoph Lohmann and a team of scientists and clinicians from Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany in this area of work. One of his areas of focus is dealing with patients who have metal allergies or develop hypersensitivity reactions to joint replacements. Dr Singh has published in this field in peer-reviewed journals.

Prior to joining private practice, Dr Singh was serving as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the National University Hospital, Assistant Professor and Ag Research Director, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National University of Singapore. He also held an appointment at the National University Cancer Institute (NCIS) as a Consultant in Surgical Oncology. Dr Singh has been very active in teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as specialist doctors from the region. He has trained numerous resident doctors and specialist doctors. Dr Singh hosted a clinical fellowship programme in Musculoskeletal Oncology and his had applicants from Asia-Pacific countries India, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Europe.
 

Dr Matthew Yeo
Plastic Surgeon

Dr Matthew Yeo is a plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital and practices at Picasso Plastic Surgery with a keen interest in oncologic reconstructive surgery.

Dr Yeo graduated from NUS in 2002, and completed plastic surgery residency in 2012.  He was awarded the Gold Medal at the national plastic surgery board examination in the same year.  In 2013, he received the HMDP award and is privileged to have undergone a fellowship in Advanced Reconstructive Microsurgery in Taiwan Republic of China under the mentorship of internationally renowned Professor Hung-Chi Chen.  During this year-long fellowship, he attained extensive experience with reconstruction of the extremities, head and neck, and breast.  He has also performed multiple short observerships to various eminent reconstructive surgeons, and his practice is an amalgamation of the decades of experience generously imparted to him by his teachers.  Dr Yeo is also the first surgeon locally to have been conferred Fellow of the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons after successful completion of the board examination in 2015.

Dr Yeo is active in postgraduate education and is currently a member of the MOH Plastic Surgery Residency Advisory Committee and previously served as a core clinical faculty member for the NHG Plastic Surgery residency program.  He is also an adjunct associate professor at the Nanyang Technological University.  He has multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and is active in academic plastic surgery circles in the Asia Pacific region.

He is the current national secretary of Singapore for the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and is the immediate past chairman of the Chapter of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, College of Surgeons, Singapore, and has served as Council Member of the College of Surgeons, Singapore previously.

In his free time, Dr Yeo is passionate about art and culture and hones this interest together with his other passion, plastic surgery.
