Diverticulitis

What is Diverticulitis?

Diverticulitis is a condition when sacs called diverticula in the colon get infected and cause rectal bleeding and severe abdominal pain. Small bulging pouches known as diverticula, can form in the lining of your digestive system and are usually found in the large intestines. They are common but seldom cause any serious problems. The most common cause for the development of diverticula in the colon is straining due to constipation as well as a lack of fibre in the diet.

Diverticulitis is a serious disease, especially if the sac bursts and bacteria and feces spread into the abdominal cavity. Surgery would be required If infection spreads and an abscess forms in the colon.
