Dr. Chong Wen Wah Roland is a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon with a primary interest in shoulder and elbow conditions.
Prior to private practice, Dr. Chong was Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon for Shoulder and Elbow at Changi General Hospital, where he specialized in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and offered solutions for irreparable rotator cuff tears with periscapular tendon transfers. He also provided arthroplasty solutions for elbow and shoulder pain and trauma, rheumatic arthritis and other degenerative conditions such as bipolar radial head replacements, total elbow and shoulder replacements and reverse replacements.
Dr. Chong obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2001, where he made it onto the Dean’s List and was awarded the Yeoh Khuan Joo Gold Medal in Surgery. He went on to pursue postgraduate training in Surgery and was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2006. The following year, he obtained his Master of Medicine in Orthopedic Surgery from NUS and was admitted into advanced speciality training in Orthopedic Surgery, where he continued to pursue his interest in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. In 2011, he was awarded the SingHealth Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Scholarship to train in Shoulder and Upper Limb Surgery at the Royal Perth Hospital in Australia, with Prof. Allan Skirving, Mr. Peter Campbell and Mr. Mark Hurworth. That year, he performed complex Shoulder and Elbow Arthroscopic, revision, trauma and replacement surgeries.
Dr. Chong also has strong interest on research and has contributed to numerous publications. He has also given presentations on Orthopedic Surgery in conferences and lectures. Dr. Chong was awarded the N Balachandran Memorial Lecture Award at the 31st Singapore Orthopaedics Association Meeting in 2009. He is currently a reviewer for the Singapore Medical Journal and was awarded the Reviewer Recognition Award in 2011.
Besides research, Dr. Chong was also a Clinical Lecturer at NUS' Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, where he trained undergraduate medical students. He was also a Clinical Physician Faculty Member of the SingHealth Residency program for Orthopedic Surgery. He is also widely involved in Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery and Arthroplasty Training both locally and regionally.
Apart from clinical work, Dr. Chong is also an avid cyclist and a gym goer. He has been actively involved in the Singapore cycling scene through regular interaction with the cycling community and involvement with SportsIN Cycling. For the last 10 years, Dr. Chong has been widely known as ‘Roland Shoulder’. Dr. Chong understands the rigorous demands and desires of an athlete and believe in bridging the gap with his patients through his personal knowledge and experience. He also understands that living an active lifestyle is key to active aging.
