Dr. Asok Kurup graduated with MBBS from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1992. He then obtained postgraduate qualifications in internal medicine which included the Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) from NUS and membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), Edinburgh, UK in 1997.
Dr. Kurup is an expert in infectious diseases and has a keen interest in HIV medicine. He dedicated his training stint to this field locally as well as at the University of California at San Diego, where he was a clinical and research fellow. He was awarded specialist accreditation in infectious diseases from the MOH Singapore and the Singapore Medical Council in 2001. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS) since 2005.
Prior to private practice, Dr. Kurup was a Senior Consultant in the Department of Infectious Diseases of Singapore General Hospital (SGH), an adjunct associate professor with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School (Singapore) and a clinical lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). He was also a former visiting consultant to Infectious Diseases Department of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) where he ran a HIV clinic at the Communicable Diseases Centre. He continues to serve as a visiting consultant to the Department of Infectious Diseases at SGH.
In his career thus far, Dr. Kurup has over 85 scientific publications and abstracts to his credit in peer-reviewed and is a regular reviewer of numerous professional and scientific publications. He continues to present his abstracts at major infectious diseases related scientific meetings locally and in the region.
Dr. Kurup also does community outreach and relief work. He was at the forefront of infectious diseases outbreaks including the H1N1 pandemic, the Nipah virus outbreak and SARS pandemic. He had helmed efforts by SGH to bring medical care and education to a disadvantaged neighbourhood, and the Sri Lanka Red Cross and Singhealth’s medical mission during Sri Lanka Tsunami.
Dr. Kurup has held several appointments in his career. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Residents Accreditation Committee (RAC),and a former chair of the Infection Control Committee (SGH) and several other committees in the Ministry of Health (MOH), Singapore.
Dr. Kurup's specialty interest is HIV medicine.
