Dr. Christopher Kong San Choon is a distinguished gastroenterologist with extensive experience in both clinical practice and medical research. He graduated from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1993. Subsequently, he became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Dr. Kong completed his training in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology in the UK, achieving accreditation into the UK Specialist Register for both specialties.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to medical research, Dr. Kong was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine after a two-year period of translational medical research using molecular and microbiological techniques in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). He has actively participated in numerous clinical trials and research studies, resulting in multiple publications in scientific and clinical journals.
In 2019, Dr. Kong performed the first motorised spiral enteroscopy in Southeast Asia, a groundbreaking technique that allows for a thorough examination of the small intestines in just 30 minutes, compared to the six hours required by balloon-assisted endoscopes. He also played a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Sengkang General Hospital, serving as the Head of Service. Previously, he was a Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital and the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre.
Dr. Kong's clinical interests encompass a wide range of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), liver diseases, fatty liver, hepatitis, bile duct diseases, pancreas diseases, IBD, and gastrointestinal cancers. He is proficient in various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (OGD), colonoscopy, small intestine enteroscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), capsule endoscopy, and Fibroscan.
Currently, Dr. Kong serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and as a Clinical Tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the Gastroenterological Society of Singapore, where he previously held the position of Treasurer.
Dr. Kong is multilingual, fluent in English, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu, Teochew, and Hokkien, enabling him to effectively communicate with a diverse patient population.
