FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) is a preliminary stool test to detect problems in the digestive or gastrointestinal tract.
Many bowel abnormalities which may develop into cancer over time, are more likely to bleed than normal tissue. If there is blood in the stool, it indicates abnormalities in the bowel and further investigation is advisable for example by colonoscopy. If cancer is found early, treatments are more effective.
The tests is commonly added in most health screening packages.
You will be given a sterile container in which to collect your stool.
Prepare to collect the stool with a plastic wrap or a bedpan. Transfer the sample into the sterile container provided and avoid mixing urine with the sample. Secure the lid of the sterile container tightly and wash your hands with soap and water.
Your sample should be handed to your doctor immediately after it is collected. You will be given a follow up appointment to review your test results.
Should you feel unwell or experience abdominal pain or bleeding, contact your doctor immediately or call our 24-Hour Medical Urgency Clinic.
