The complaint of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is a common problem among elderly men. They include a variety of storage, voiding and post-micturition symptoms indicative of lover urinary tract dysfunction. The presence of LUTS in older men is commonly attributed to Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a one of the most common diseases among the older men in Singapore, especially men who aged 40 or above. BPH affects men as they age, with almost half of men over 50 developing symptoms. While BPH is benign, delays in symptoms management or treatment may lead to complications like urinary infections, kidney failure or bladder outlet obstruction. The presence of LUTS often results in a poor quality of life (QOL). LUTS have been shown to have negative impact on work productivity, libido, and emotional well-being. However, despite relatively high reported levels of bother, many men with moderate-to-severe LUTS still do not seek medical advice for their symptoms. This lunch talk seeks to give an overview about LUTS/BPH symptoms, the importance on bladder, the therapies of BPH with the preservation of sexual function as well as questions and answers.
