Dr. Ronny Tan Ban Wei is a Consultant Urologist and Andrologist who is trained locally, board certified by the Specialist Accreditation Board and fellowship-trained in Andrology, Male Subfertilty, Sexual Medicine and Urological Prosthetic Surgery. He is the first Singaporean to undergo a clinical fellowship in USA in this niche specialty.
During his fellowship, Dr. Tan was trained in the placement of urethral slings, artificial urinary sphincters and penile prosthesis (both malleable and inflatable) using the Coloplast and Boston Scientific AMS systems.
Dr Tan is proficient in single-incision concomitant placement of prostheses for both erectile dysfunction and stress urinary incontinence. He was one of the first to use intralesional injections to treat Peyronie’s disease and reported on the efficacy of second generation PDE5 inhibitors for treating erectile dysfunction. He had the privilege of performing prostatic urethral lift using the novel Urolift system while on fellowship. Prior to starting private practice, Dr. Tan was Director of Andrology in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and helmed the Complex Erectile Dysfunction Clinic. He pioneered the use of low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy (LiESWT) for erectile dysfunction in restructured hospitals. For the treatment of BPH, Dr. Tan offers TURP, TUVP (greenlight laser) and minimally invasive treatment including Urolift. He placed the first Urolift implant in Singapore on October 16, 2019.
Dr. Tan is experienced in treating penile deformities ranging from frenulum brevie to congenital penile curvatures to Peyronie’s disease. He offers evaluation for male subfertility and is trained in sperm retrieval techniques ranging from percutaneous sperm aspiration, microsurgical TESE to electro-ejaculation.
He offers microsurgical varicocelectomy for treatment of varicoceles.
Dr. Tan served as Clinical Core Faculty of the NHG Urology Residency Program, trained many urology specialists and was awarded “Best Teacher” for his passion and dedication for teaching. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University and a Senior Lecturer of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He is a regular reviewer for the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Sexual Medicine Reviews and Urology (Gold Journal). He has also served as Course Director in numerous symposiums, masterclasses and courses on andrology and sexual medicine.
Dr Tan is often invited as Speaker and faculty of loco-regional and international conferences.
He was awarded the coveted Gold Award at the Asian Hospital Management Awards 2018 for cost-effective ambulatory day surgical management of patients in TTSH who underwent TURP/TUVP. He was on the Committee for Clinical Practice Guidelines 2012 for treatment of Premature Ejaculation and was Co-chairman for the SMHS Guidelines 2014 for management of erectile dysfunction. He was awarded the Youth Fellowship of the Urological Association of Urology in 2017 and is currently on the Executive Committee of the Singapore Urological Association. He serves as Vice President of the Society for Men’s Health Singapore, is Honorary Secretary of the Society for Continence Singapore, Vice-President of the Global Chinese Andrology and Sexual Medicine Association as well as Chairman of the Membership Committee of the International Society for Sexual Medicine.
