Dr. Gerald Tan is a renowned Urology Specialist whose expertise lies in minimally invasive procedures and robotic-assisted surgery for prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. To date, Dr. Tan has been involved in over 550 robotic radical prostatectomies and is one of the first in Singapore to perform robotic partial nephrectomy for early kidney cancer and robotic radical cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Dr. Tan is proficient in robotic and advanced laparoscopic procedures and also performs major cancer and reconstructive surgeries for complex pelvic cancer.
Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Tan headed Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Robotic Urology Task Force as surgical proctor and he helmed the development of the hospital’s inpatient-care path for patients undergoing robotic prostatectomy.
Dr. Tan graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1996 and completed his specialist training in Urology in 2007 at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. Dr. Tan then completed a two-year fellowship in prostate cancer research and robotic urologic oncology, working under world-renowned robotic surgeon, Professor Ash Tewari as well as Director of both the Prostate Cancer Institute and LeFrak Institute of Robotic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, USA. Together with Professor Tewari and his co-investigators at Cornell University, Dr. Tan explored the potential of novel laser technologies to better visualize the tissues around the prostate that contain delicate microscopic nerves responsible for erection; a ground breaking research recognized internationally with top awards and honors conferred by the American Urological Association, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the International College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tan had received numerous international academic awards and honors. He was the named recipient of the prestigious Ferdinand C. Valentine Fellowship in Urologic Research by the New York Academy of Medicine, the AACR-GlaxoSmithKline Outstanding Clinical Scholar Award by the American Association of Cancer Research, the John Steyn Travelling Fellowship in Urology and the James Syme Medal for outstanding academic achievement by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
In 2011, he was awarded the Yahya Cohen Memorial Lectureship by the College of Surgeons, Singapore for excellence in clinical research. In 2012, he was named the Outstanding Young Urologist of Asia by the Urological Association of Asia for his contributions to the field of urology.
Apart from clinical work, Dr. Tan has authored seven book chapters and over 25 peer-reviewed scientific papers published in prestigious journals that include Urology (Gold Journal), European Urology, Urologic Clinics of North America, Journal of Endourology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and British Journal of Urology International. He is a regular reviewer for the British Journal of Urology International in the fields of minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
Dr. Tan's specialty interests are minimally invasive procedures and robotic-assisted surgery for prostate, kidney and bladder cancers.
