Dr. Shim Hang Hock is a gastroenterologist with subspecialty interest in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and digestive cancer screening. A firm believer in holistic and patient-centric care, Dr. Shim’s dedication and service excellence has won him several service awards over the course of his career.
Prior to private practice, Dr. Shim practiced clinical gastroenterology and general hepatology in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) where he served as the Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre, where he continues to be a Visiting Consultant today. Dr. Shim was also an appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School.
Dr. Shim obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from University of Southampton, U.K. in 2007 and was accredited as a gastroenterology specialist in 2015. In 2016, he was awarded the Healthcare Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) scholarship by Singapore’s Ministry of Health to undergo Advanced Fellowship under the mentorship of Professors Remo Panaccione and Cynthia Seow at University of Calgary’s Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, one of the largest IBD units in the world.
Apart from clinical work, Dr. Shim is also an avid researcher who has published numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters in high impact medical journals. He has also been an invited peer reviewer for various medical journals and was closely involved in multiple clinical trials. These reflect his clinical expertise in the IBD field, especially when it comes to management of patients with complicated diseases, use of novel therapies and pregnancy alongside IBD. Dr. Shim sits on various medical advisory boards and is regularly invited as a faculty/ speaker in medical conferences both locally and regionally. During his term in SGH, he also contributed to colorectal cancer screening and small bowel service.
Dr. Shim's specialty interests are capsule endoscopy, colon cancer screening, general gastroenterology, hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, small bowel enteroscopy and therapeutic endoscopy.
