Dr. Chen Weihao is a gastroenterologist and obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2008. He underwent his specialist training at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and was accredited as a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology with the Specialist Accreditation Board, Singapore in 2016.
In 2018, he was awarded the Healthcare Manpower Development Program (HMDP) scholarship by the Ministry of Health to undergo subspecialty training in inflammatory bowel disease and clinical nutrition at Austin Hospital, Australia. He also trained in Germany to become part of the first group of local gastroenterologists proficient in intestinal ultrasound. Dr. Chen has been formally practicing gastroenterology and hepatology at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital where he had set up the hospital’s services for inflammatory bowel disease and point-of-care intestinal ultrasound. He is also an integral member of the hospital nutrition support team and is the main gastroenterologist responsible for the care of malnourished patients on parenteral nutrition as well as patients with short bowel syndrome and intestinal failure.
Additionally, Dr. Chen is adept at performing diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy (including advanced imaging techniques, e.g. chromoendoscopy) and video capsule endoscopy. Besides his clinical work, he taught medical students from both Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University. He was also a clinical preceptor to Master of Nursing students from NUS.
Dr. Chen’s specialty interests are inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) and intestinal ultrasound.
